Introductory Reflection

Dear Prof. Hunter,

To introduce myself, I am Jerry Vaughn. I am originally from the Bronx but moved to North Carolina at the age of 4 with my dad and my grandparents. Eventually, my dad and I ended up moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina when I was 5. When I was 12, I moved to Jamaica where my mom lived. Since 2021, I have been back and forth between New York and Jamaica.

I see myself as an average writer and an excellent student who always tries to achieve my best. I call myself an average writer because I feel like my writing skills are not bad but are not excellent either. In terms of being an excellent student, I say that because my grades have always been great, I feel like I am the prime example of what a student should be (attentive in class, asking questions, submitting work, etc.) This semester, I want to accomplish getting admitted to the Sophie Davis program, learn, and gain more details about this college and its resources, make new friends, join two clubs I really enjoy and finally pass this semester with excellence. I feel like my background and personal history affected me in terms of being a student and as a learner. My dad used to teach at Harry Truman high school, so he always made sure I was at top of my work when I was in elementary school. Because of that experience with him, I subconsciously developed the mentality to eventually get on top of the work I am doing which helped me in many situations back in high school, in and out of the learning environment. I can also say that being in Jamaica for my teen years helped me to be more open minded and more determined to achieve my goals because I was put in the shoes of a child in a 3rd world country which circumstances are not great or as fortunate as students living/doing school in the USA. Because of this I was more interested and keener in my studies than my peers and friends in Jamaica and back home in the USA.

I hope to accomplish remarkable things as a professional. What I mean by this is making change in society. Pushing for better laws and circumstances for citizens not only in New York, but all over the nation. It will be a long journey, but I believe with enough determination and passion, it will happen.
